As an avid reader, I find myself on Booktok quite often. One of the most popular books on Booktok was “They Both Die at the End” by Adam Silvera, so of course I had to read it. I saw a plethora of videos describing how heart wrenching this book was and how it legit left them sobbing. I however, as usual, didn’t shed one tear, but not because I didn't like it. After putting the book down, I would have immediately given it five stars. However, upon reflection, it was a solid two star read. Have you ever dived into a book and absolutely adored the concept, but felt the expression in the writing was mediocre? Well that’s how I felt about “They Both Die at the End”. I absolutely loved Silvera’s whole idea for this book, but was disappointed with the outcome. Though it has been a while since I have read the book it was not memorable and did not possess that lasting impact some books give you. There were lovable moments in the book, but overall the writing ruined it for me. Personally, I feel Silvera could have developed Mateo and Rufus’ relationship more and given it more substance so he could crush at the end! But he literally met me LESS than half way. However, do not let me deter you. Perhaps you enjoyed the book or want to read it in the future. This book may fulfill all of your expectations.
