I have to preface this review by saying I do not read many fantasy books, however this one by Tricia Levenseller is one I would definitely read again. This book is great if you are looking for a short, digestible fantasy, with a strong female lead, and fast paced storyline.
One of my favorite things about this book was the action. While reading Daughter of the Pirate King it became clear that Levenseller really knows how to hook her readers. I was immediately invested in the direction the story was going from the first line when the main character spews the words “I hate having to dress like a man”. The action is not lost after the first chapter, but is distributed tastefully throughout this fantasy novel. While the main character Alosa, daughter of the pirate king, is out on a mission to find an ancient map aboard an enemy ship, we as readers witness her brazen, clever, and skillful qualities. Alosa is definitely not a bashful young girl, but is assertive in every obstacle that comes her way, whether it be trying to retrieve the map or facing the infuriating first mate of the enemy ship, Rider. Alosa is the type of female main character that had me wishing I was a pirate that could go on dangerous expeditions at sea.
I also found the pace of the Daughter of the Pirate King to be perfect. The book is only three hundred pages, categorizing it as one of the shorter fantasy novels. I liked the quick pace of the book because it made it easy to follow along. Many times fantasy novels can be confusing with the tongue-twister names, the world building, and the magical powers every character possesses. Levenseller eliminates these frustrations by making the book a reasonable length and spending less time configuring different worlds and kingdoms, but instead keeps the book action packed.
If you are someone who enjoyed the movie series Pirates of the Caribbean and are searching for a book along those lines or just want to indulge in a simple fantasy novel, then Daughter of the Pirate King is the right choice!
